Wojciech Ireneusz Sobczyk is an artist who’s decidedly un-contemporary. His interests are focused on a broadly understood concept of humanism, while his artistic practice draws from traditional, oftentimes even archaic, techniques, topics and iconographies.
Wojciech Ireneusz Sobczyk: Affinities II
Curated by: Aleksander Celusta
June 29 — July 22, 2018
Henryk Gallery, Krakow, Poland
Sobczyk reaches back to the fundamental questions on the nature of Mankind, the existence of Good and Evil, the essence of Beauty and Art. His isn’t, however, a strictly elementary return to the ideas and craft of a Renaissance artist. In his axiological pursuit to grasp reality, he takes us on a journey towards the past, only to end up soaring forward beyond the present. His activities are situated just between right before and right after the current moment, much like the serpent Ouroboros, which is constantly consuming itself and rebirthing itself.
Soczyk’s Affinities amid the values of the humanities take on a characteristically material dimension. Through an obsessive manual dexterity and a passion for uncanny details, he builds his own moral corpus. The specific cult of the physical isn’t limited to the craftsman – it’s rather closer to the realm of alchemy. Some of his objects are created with an artisanal precision, while others undergo decomposition or crystallization, setting them between a synthetic process and a natural one. His workshop-lab becomes a space for breaking down ideas to their basic elements, which are ruled by their own rules of development that go beyond time. His take on the substance of the world recalls and relays traces of history, along with proof of good and evil. Sobczyk’s fetish with regard to ideas and matter come together in an immutable and sophisticated tangle, which translates into a nostalgic search for one’s own spiritual formula.
Two chapters of the 'Affinities' project by Wojciech Ireneusz Sobczyk were presented at the LETO Gallery in Warsaw and the Henryk Gallery in Krakow.
